Taking Risks In The Fault in Our Stars
The Fault in Our Stars by John Green is a heart wrenching book on the sagas of two teenage cancer patients, Hazel and Augustus. Hazel Grace Lancaster is 16 and knows her odds of beating cancer are not in her favor. She miraculously survives treatment for her Stage 4 Thyroid cancer. Since the thyroid cancer resides mostly in her lungs, she carries around an oxygen tank to “help her lungs be better lungs”. Since she graduated high school early, she now takes classes at the local community college. As a result of her being a premature college student she spends a lot of her time reading. Her mother realizes she is socially deprived and forces her to attend a cancer kids support group. There she meets Augustus Waters, a boy who will change her perspective of life completely. Augustus, also known as Gus, is 17 and has a more optimistic look on life. He has osteosarcoma, which caused his leg to be amputated; he now has a prosthetic leg. Hazel and Augustus’ relationship continues to grow and they make each other see the bright side.
Throughout their love story, Hazel and Augustus learn to live their lives in the moment and to take risks, because they know they can not afford to take a moment for granted. When Hazel expresses her desire to meet one of her idols, Augustus jumps at the chance to make her happy. He uses his wish from the Make a Wish Foundation to plan a surprise international trip for him and Hazel. Although there are many medical dangers on this trip, Augustus and Hazel take the risk and seize the opportunity for the experience of a lifetime. In the book and in our trailer, Hazel says to Augustus “I love you, present tense.” This is such an influential quote because it masterfully portrays how the two must live everything in the moment, because cancer could take them away from each other at any second. In this way, Hazel and Augustus are focusing on “living their best lives today.”
